Course Design

Unique Design, Unique Designer

Recognized today as one of golf’s budding young superstar designers, Tom Doak loves the classic links courses of Scotland and Ireland, and in Beechtree he has coaxed the best of them across the Atlantic.

“Our designs emphasize strategy and short game interest — things which have been overlooked by many modern architects. Therse are the qualities which will bring golfers back time and again.”
TOM DOAK, RENAISSANCE GOLF DESIGN

The layout enhances the natural beauty of the land by incorporating into play its natural elements. Little earth was moved during construction. Instead, the rolling hills, meandering streams, natural marshes and woodlands of the Aberdeen countryside were left unspoiled to dictate the play of each hole. This “lay-of the-the-land” architecture reflects Doak’s commitment to the most fundamental tenet of golf – “We play the ball as it lies.”

“From the time you pull up to the curb until you leave with your clubs cleaned and loaded back into your vehicle, you will get your money’s worth.”

“In Scotland, after all, the links have no trees to stop a wild shot from being swept away by the wind to perdition. But there are also none to stymie recovery.”

Among Tom Doak’s designs are High Pointe Golf Club, Williamsburg, MI; The Legends (Heathland Course), Myrtle Beach, SC; Harbour View Golf Links, Suffolk, VA; and Stonewall Golf Club, Elverson, PA. His most recognized design to date is Pacific Dunes, (Bandon Dunes, OR), which ENTERED Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 Golf Courses in the World” at #26 (2001).
